The good old days. We hear about them often; either from parents, grandparents or even our friends. We'll reminisce about high school years, early wedded bliss and of course....the fashion trends that used to be....and sometimes come back to haunt us!
There's often a reason that something goes out of fashion....really, what woman wants to wear a corset every day....and really, a person can only wear so much tie-dye! (or maybe not!) As we evolve as a society and become decidedly more casual over all...many fashion traditions and trends go bye bye thanks to our human demands. While I believe it's mainly for the good, society has started to put comfort and ease of care, ahead of appearances and "respectability"....and while these changes show up everywhere from our pantyhose (or mainly lack there of) to the decidedly more casual approach many take in their dress when attending formal events, such as weddings...it's also meant the loss of some fabulous jewelry trends.
Some say a diamond is a girls best friend...when really, truly...it's pearls that are a girls best friend! Pearls look wonderful on everyone and no piece of jewelry will throw a more flattering light on your complexion! Pearls use to be a tradition bestowed upon every young woman...whether it was to celebrate her 16th birthday or her wedding. Every woman owned a set of pearls; however, today, many do not. Nothing is as fresh, classy and sexy as a strand of pearls....so think about adding a bit of tradition to your wardrobe!
Another jewelry item that you don't see as much nowadays, is a lovely strand of Jet beads. Jet, which is one of the oldest jewelry constructing materials, is created from a type of brown coal or fossilized wood that is put in sea water. There it converts to Jet. Many think Jet necklaces were only worn during periods of mourning....as the black beads naturally lent themselves to being appropriate during that time. However, long necklaces of Jet became very popular in the 20's, when multiple strands were worn from the neck to the waist. Knotted in a similar fashion as pearls....these necklaces were worn for happy occasions and often for celebrations and formal events as well. Add a long necklace to your wardrobe....even if it isn't Jet...there are many wonderful materials available in black!
Matched Sets....what can I say? There was a time when every lady had multiple "sets" of jewelry. Perfectly matched pieces...a necklace, bracelet and earrings...all pretty much identical. My belief is that, as society has relaxed....so have the longing of women everywhere to have their jewelry all be identical. And it's okay...either way! Sometimes we have pieces that we love so much, that we just have to have more of them. Wear them together....or wear one or 2 of the pieces at one occasion and the 3rd piece at another. However, also know, that today....nothing has to match! yay!! Wear what you like and put it with other pieces you like...you don't even have to make sure the metals are the same (although some still follow that rule...and that's okay as well!). Hopefully you're seeing the trend....don't worry what the pieces are....if they speak to you, make you feel happy, or take you on happy remembrances...just embrace it!
And finally....another tradition that has sadly passed by the wayside. Quality over quantity. As our society seems to go....disposable, possessions, options....so goes the jewelry trends. At one time, a woman might only own a few pieces of jewelry, but they were quality pieces that stood the test of time and became heirloom pieces to be treasured by daughters and granddaughters. Now, we tend to want more options and lots of it. Inexpensive and quantity. While I'm all in favour of inexpensive, fun finds....that will be a hit this summer...and gone next; I also would like to encourage all of you to have at least a piece or 2 that is a real treasure. And by treasure.....I don't mean expensive. I mean a piece made of quality materials or lovingly made or a special design that you love to wear and will enjoy telling the story to future generations. Jewelry is something that in many ways remains timeless and is easy to leave behind. How wonderful is it....to have a photo of your grandmother wearing a pair of earrings, that you've had re-purposed into a bracelet? The stories live on!
Do you remember a jewelry trend that is no longer followed? Do you own a piece of jewelry that belonged to someone special in your life? Do you have a treasured piece of jewelry? I'd love to hear about it.....
